Art and Model Making Classes:

The anatomy and physiology through art classes utilize models constructed from common inexpensive items, while simultaneously learning in-depth physiology. Click HERE for photos.

Art Project modules currently available:

  • Skin
  • Eye
  • Digestive System
  • Cells
  • Mouth and Throat
  • Bronchial Tree
  • Torso

Modeling the Skin. Learn about the qualities of the two layers of the skin as you draw the cells. Choose to make hot or cold skin as you learn about skins role in temperature regulation and draw the blood vessels. Create models of hair, sweat glands, oil glands, and nerve receptors out of clay and place them onto the drawing. Enclose the entire model in a plastic sheet protector, number every thing and create a key.

Modeling the Eye. Create a model eyeball using a hollow plastic ball. The outside shows the sclera, iris, pupil, optic nerve and skeletal muscles. The ball unscrews to reveal the lens, cilary muscles, blood vessels, rods and cones of the retina and the optic disk.

Model the Digestive System. Experience the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract with this model, contained in a plastic basin to represent the abdomino-pelvic cavity. A continuous tube made out of various materials is created to form the actual gastrointestinal tract. Small tubes and sponges represent the accessory organs.

Edible Cell Modeling. Common foods are used to prepare edible cells! Sliced fruits, veggies, cold cuts, cheese and jello become the organelles of a "salad" cell, "pizza" cell and a "fruit salad" cell. All parts of each cell are properly labeled with toothpicks and tape, and the finished models are served for lunch.

Mouth and Throat Modeling. Built out of a plastic cup and tubes, this model teaches: the relationship of the trachea and esophagus to each other; the function of the epiglottis; and where the nasal passages and Eustachian tubes enter the throat. Teeth, tongue, uvula and taste buds are added using modeling clay and beads. Can be combined with Digestive System model.

Painting the Bronchial Tree. Inspired by drawings of mature trees, draw the trachea (trunk), bronchi (two main branches) and bronchioles (smaller branches). The alveoli become the leaves. When the tree is turned upside down, a heart is placed between the bronchi, and blood vessels are drawn along the branches to the alveoli.

Modeling the Torso. With this model relates the size and relationship of all the internal organs to each other. First, the torso of each person is traced onto brown paper. Each internal organ is then cut out of colorful construction paper and placed in the appropriate locations and layer of the body. The organs can be created so with a lift of a flap, their inner structure is visible.
